 Outlook 2003 RPC over HTTP Configuration

This page is designed to walk you through configuring RPC over HTTP for Outlook 2003, which will allow full Outlook functionality from any location that allows port 80 traffic.

Important Notes:

1. Install the CSE windows certificates

In order to use RPC over HTTP, SSL is required. You will need to install the root certificate of the CA:

To install the CA Certificate, navigate to https://farmer.cs.washington.edu/certsrv (USING IE!). You may be warned about the farmer certificate, Click OK/YES.

Click the DOWNLOAD A CA CERTIFICATE, then click INSTALL THIS CA CERTIFICATE CHAIN:

You will be prompted with a warning, click YES:

You will be prompted to save the certificate, click YES.

You will be notified that the certificate was successfully saved:

To install the e2k7.cseresearch.cs.washington.edu Certificate, navigate to https://e2k7.cseresearch.cs.washington.edu/rootinstall.asp (USING IE!). You may be warned about the e2k7 certificate, Click OK/YES.

You will be prompted with a warning, click YES:

2. Configure Outlook for RPC over HTTP

First, close Outlook. During this procedure, you may be asked for your logon information more than once. Please enter it in the DOMAIN\Username format:

Open up the control panel, and find the mail icon. Double click it and see:

Click the EMAIL ACCOUNTS button, and select VIEW OR CHANGE EXISTING E-MAIL ACCOUNTS:

On this screen, highlight the MICROSOFT EXCHANGE SERVER and click the CHANGE button:

Ensure that the exchange server is set to: e2k7.cseresearch.cs.washington.edu

Click MORE SETTINGS... and select the CONNECTIONS tab:

Check the box at the bottom, and click EXCHANGE PROXY SETTINGS button. Fill in the URL for the exchange server: e2k7.cseresearch.cs.washington.edu, select when you want to use RPC over HTTP (fast/slow/both).

CLick OK, Apply, Finish, etc. etc. until all the dialogs are gone. Start Outlook 2003. In the lower right hand corner of the screen, there is a tiny outlook icon. HOLD DOWN THE LEFT CTRL button, and RIGHT CLICK THIS ICON. Choose the CONNECTION STATUS option.

You should see a screen like the following, that lists the connections as HTTPS:
