CSE Windows 8 Information
Microsoft Windows 8 Product Page
We are currently working to improve the integration of Windows 8 into the CSE dept. Windows 8 is being shipped with new devices and is available in stores now. CSE users can obtain their copy of Windows 8 from Microsoft DreamSpark
One known issue is that Windows 8 is currently unable to interface with the CSE printing system. If you have Windows 8, you may not be able to print.
We have set up some windows VMs that you can log in to, and experience what it is like to use Windows 8. Click here to get started: Windows 8 VDI
NOTE: The videos on this page require QUICKTIME to be installed (or some other MP4 web plugin).
WINDOWS 8 TIPS
- METRO UI START SCREEN:The interface in Windows 8 is new as well. The traditional start menu has been removed, in favor of a full screen user interface called METRO UI (or simply METRO). Initially it may seem difficult to use, but you can customize it to suit your work methods. You can right click items to remove them, add them, or re-size them. Right click in an open area to access the ALL APPS screen, which you can use to add items to the main screen. A short video on re-arranging the start screen...
- WINDOWS 8 SEARCH:One of the most useful functions of windows is the Search Box. You can enter in programs or websites you want to find. At first glance, the Search Box isn't anywhere to be found. To access the Search Box, you will first need to open the right side hidden menu. This menu is available in METRO UI and Classic Deskop but the same items are not displayed! A quick video about accessing the right side menu and doing a search for a program...
- WINDOWS 8, 2 DESKTOPS:The METRO UI is actually a different visual interface. Only programs written to work withMETRO UI will show up. For that reason, the Classic Desktop interface is also included (you may have noticed a button that says 'Show Desktop', which will take you to the traditional desktop). Older programs need to operate in the Classic Desktop, and windows 8 will therefore switch to that desktop when you open an older program... but how do you get back? There is NO Start Menu in the new desktop. You can press the WINDOWS key, or move the mouse all the way down to the Bottom Left corner to get back. A short video on the 2 desktops...
- WINDOWS 8, THE CONTROL PANEL:The windows Control Panel is the main way you access an array of important windows settings. The Wireless MAC address is one important piece of information you may need to register a wireless device on a network. Other important items contained in the control panel: User Accounts, Firewall settings, Display Settings, etc. etc. AFAIK, the easiest way to get there is to go to the Classic Desktop, move the mouse all the way to the bottom right, a menu will appear on the right of the screen, select the icon that looks like a gear. A short video on accessing the control panel...
