Visit Days officially go from 8:00am Tuesday to 6:00pm Wednesday, but field trips and especially research group events will very likely last longer. Ask your host and/or your faculty contact for specific details!
You are welcome to attend all or part of any of the research overviews. Feel free to go to half of any research overview if you want to attend two that overlap or want more time for individual meetings.
This schedule is still being revised, so it's subject to change. Check back!

Activities open to all. In the research group activities you will interact with current group members in a relaxed atmostphere and begin to build a network of friends and colleagues at UW. |
The Seattle Area
The seattle area activities allow you to hang out with current grad students, get a glimpse of our city, ask any remaining questions questions, and decide if Seattle is the place for you. |

| 12:00PM | Boxed Lunches Available
For all activities, please meet in Gates Commons unless otherwise specified. |
12–3pm. Buffet lunch
at Ivar's,
a short walk from UW and on the waterfront, overlooking Lake
Union and the downtown skyline.
12–3pm. We will go
to Hank
Levy's house
on Lake
Washington for some lunch and dessert. Leave from Gates
Commons.
1:45–6pm. In the self-proclaimed "coffee capitol",
it's only logical that you can join us for a tour around the
famous coffee shops and cafes in the Capitol Hill
neighborhood. (And by coffee shops, we certainly don't mean
Starbucks!)
12:30–3pm. We'll go
to Dan
Weld's house for lunch and conversation.
1–3pm. We'll take a private tour
at Theo's Chocolate
Factory in Fremont.
Come hang out with friendly CompBio researchers while enjoying
delicious chocolate samples! We'll leave Gates Commons to
catch the bus to Fremont for the tour.
12–5pm. Join us for our
weekly Design Use
Build lunch seminar (in EE403). We will then form up around
1:30pm in the Gates Commons to head
to The Garage
for bowling, billiards, and beer.
12–5pm. Instead of the box lunch,
we'llbus
to Fremont for
lunch at the Red
Door. Walking tour of some outdoor art such as
the Fremont
Troll, Lenin,
the Rocket,
and Waiting
for the Interurban. Followed by (what else in Seattle)
coffee!
|
1–3pm. Walk around campus and the University District
and potentially grab a snack or some coffee. We'll be back in
time for 3pm activities.
|
||
| 3:00PM | For all activities, please meet in Gates Commons unless otherwise specified. |
3pm–6pm. The Burke
Gilman is a great trail that used to be a train line. It
has trees, fresh air, birds and bikers with funny
clothes. Chances are you will be riding a bike there next
year! So join us for a 25 minute walk on the trail towards
professor Luis
Ceze's house for local foods and drinks, games, and
great conversation.
3–6pm. We'll go
to Bill
Howe's house near the UW campus and sample some
homemade smoked salmon, plus northwest wine, beer, and
cheese. There may also be an appearance from the official
database lab chocolate fountain. Decadent!
|
3–6pm. Go to the
famous Pike's Place
Market downtown. See Rachel the pig, flying fish, colorful
food and flower vendors, street buskers, and a huge selection of
craft vendors. Back before dinner.
3–6:30pm. Go to the
historic Pioneer
Square neighborhood to take
the Underground
Tour. Find out about the Totem Pole of Justice, how
Seattle is (and is not) like Cleveland, the extent to which
this city's history involves people being really really drunk,
and other fun facts with which to amuse and awe everyone you
know when you get back. We'll try to get back by 6pm, but may
be a bit later.
4–6pm. We'll head to the venerable College Inn (just a
ten-minute walk) for drinks and socializing. Stay for the
whole time or come and go as you please; if you don't catch
the first group heading over, check in Gates Commons and find
some buddies to walk over with. Some groups will go to dinner
on the Ave afterwards. (21+ only, ID required.)
|
||
| 6:00PM | Visit days officially over (but research group and other activities continue!) |
We'll go to the communal kitchen in the Joule Apartments in
Capitol
Hill where we will cook and eat endless amounts of
delicious food.
6pm–9pm. We'll go
to Anna Karlin's house for a party.
