Welcome to the Autumn 1995 issue of Mossy Bits. This issue not only marks Mossy Bits' re-emergence after a two year hiatus, it also marks the publication's transition from printed form to the web. This change has allowed an explosion in submission formats, including the journal's first musical and video submissions. We hope you'll find the new electronic format of Mossy Bits even more stimulating than the old.For those of you who are new to Mossy Bits, welcome. Mossy Bits is the "quarterly" creative arts journal produced by Computer Science graduate students at the University of Washington. We were hoping to say something informative here about its origins, etymology, etc., but don't have any hard and fast information at this time. Therefore, if anyone reading was an ex-editor, or is familiar with Mossy Bits' long and sordid history, please let us know.
Part of the vision of the on-line format of Mossy Bits is to keep the format completely flexible and unspecified from issue to issue. For this issue, our vision was to stick to a magazine-like format, with minimal links to other pages and a mostly sequential access pattern. We will eagerly listen to suggestions for motifs of future issues. So if you become frustrated by your inability to jump to 100 different locations on each page, stay tuned and maybe in compensation the next issue's approach will be to hyper-hyperlink every word.
Finally, for graduate students in the department, a word on submissions. Mossy Bits happily accepts submissions of any kind in any medium, from a fully written HTML page to an audio cassette that contains your masterpiece. One of the goals for this issue is to create in your mind the picture that "anything goes" when it comes to submissions -- in terms of medium, quality, seriousness, and content. Submissions for the Winter 1996 issue will be accepted starting January 2nd. In addition, we'll be needing a new winter-oriented masthead, so if you're interested in submitting one, please do. Thanks for reading Mossy Bits, and be sure to direct any feedback to us at our new e-mail address: mossy-bits@cs.washington.edu
