<P>
<HR SIZE=5 WIDTH="100%">Chinook is a hardware-software co-synthesis CAD
tool for embedded systems. It is designed for
<B>control dominated, reactive</B> systems under timing constraints,
with a new emphasis on <B>distributed</B> architectures.
Current topics include synthesis of run-time support,
communication synthesis, and efficient and accurate
co-simulation. The co-simulator --
<A HREF="http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/hineskj/PiaMain.html">Pia</A>
- is available as a Java applet. More details will be available shortly.</P>

<P>The way we envision Chinook to be used is that the designer writes a
behavioral description once, and uses Chinook to map it onto several
target architecture interactively. The designer makes the
partitioning and allocation decisions, and Chinook helps with mapping.
This enables designers to make informed design decisions at the high level
early in the design cycle, rather than reiterate after having worked out
all the low level details. Retargetability will not only make the designs
more maintainable but also enables the designer to take advantage of new
technologies, instead of being tied down by legacy code.</P>
