We propose a retargetable way of specifying reactive real-time systems and methods for synthesizing the software architecture. The central idea is the formalization of modes and the coordination between target-independent user-code and target-dependent support, including real-time scheduling and device drivers. We have defined the API for software architecture synthesis in the Java programming language.
