Ahoy! relies on the following search services:

Metacrawler, which is quite comprehensive because it in turn accesses:
- Open Text
- Lycos
- WebCrawler
- InfoSeek
- Yahoo!
- Galaxy
- Excite
- Hotbot
- Inktomi, and
- Alta Vista
Yahoo!, which provides more organization for its database than other services. Ahoy! uses a local copy of part of the Yahoo! database to find the homepages of institutions.

In addition, Ahoy! will query various email-services in order to obtain the persons email address (which will help Ahoy! to guide its directed search).
