Informally, a system leaks information if it reveals private information through some non-traditional and unanticipated channel. For example, our work on remote device fingerprinting shows that timing information about a stream of TCP packets can leak private information about the packets' originating physical device. Our broader research involves systematically analyzing systems for new information leakage channels and, for each new information leakage channels, developing appropriate protection mechanism.
