Incoming Exchange Students

Students from KTH, ETH, or Saarland who were selected to attend UW CSE by their university need to complete the following steps:

1. Apply as a visiting graduate student to the University of Washington. Please make sure you apply as visiting graduate student to our Ph.D. program (not the professional masters or combined B.S./M.S. program). After submitting the online application and paying the application fee, please print it out along with all of your required application documents.  Scan your full application packet and send via email to the CSE Departmenal Exchange Coordinator, Elise deGoede Dorough.

While the department is flexible on when we receive your application materials, the International Programs & Exchanges Office (IP&E) recommends submitting your packet no later than:

  • March 1, for an Autumn quarter start
  • August 1, for a Winter or Spring quarter start

Please note: The requirement of a TOEFL or IELTS test has been waived between UW CSE and our direct exchange partner universities. A certificate of English proficiency or a confirmation letter from a university official will be sufficient. Please include this document with the application materials you email to the CSE Departmental Exchange Coordinator.

2. Once you are formally admitted by the University of Washington (notification from the Registrar's Office), you must return to your online application, indicate that you accept the offer of admission, and begin the I-20 request process.  Any questions about the I-20 application can be addressed to the Graduate Admissions Office, uwgrad@uw.edu.

Please note: Then Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (ECD) has been waived for UW CSE direct exchange students.

3. Read through IP&E’s pre-departure guide for information on FIUTS orientation, fees, health insurance, applying for campus housing, registration, submitting your measles immunization verification, etc. The majority of steps here are *required* for incoming exchange students, so it’s important that you read through this page carefully. The Admissions Office will communicate with you about many of these steps, too.

4. Exchange students are eligible to register during Period 2, after submitting their measles immunization verification. Helpful links to prepare for registration are:

As a visiting graduate student, you may register for both undergraduate and graduate CSE courses. However, you will need the help of a CSE undergraduate advisor in order to register for 300- or 400-level classes. Space may be limited in undergraduate courses, but we will do our best to find a space for you. We encourage you to check in with your CSE exchange coordinator, Elise deGoede Dorough, about your intended schedule and with questions about courses before you register.

5. Email Elise and Lindsay with your intended arrival date and the date you’d like to check-in at the department. We will email you the form you’ll need to request a computer account and operating system for your CSE office machine. The CSE check-in will include setting up a CSE network ID, finding out about graduate student mailing lists, finalizing registration for courses.
