Who We Are

School Demographics

The Allen School aims to educate the next generation of computer scientists and engineers, fostering innovation and reflecting the diverse needs, backgrounds and experiences of students and technology users worldwide.

We actively work to broaden participation in computing education and careers at all levels and to cultivate a welcoming environment in which all students, faculty and staff can thrive. We track demographic data, in addition to collecting qualitative feedback, to inform our ongoing efforts aimed at making computing education and the Allen School more accessible to underserved populations and building a more inclusive community here in our school, and more generally in the computing field.

Demographic data, while informative, does not capture the whole of a person’s identity or experience. It should therefore be considered a useful but imperfect reflection of the diversity of our community.

Notes

✝ The Allen School undergraduate program welcomes transfer students in both spring and fall quarters; spring admissions data is not included in the fall count. “Other” includes current UW students admitted to the major after their arrival at the university. Allen School Ph.D. enrollment figure excludes students currently on leave.

* URM refers to the definition of federally recognized underrepresented minority populations (African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and Latinx/Hispanic). International students are not included in the URM data.

^ The federal Pell Grant program supports undergraduate students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education. The data is reported as a percentage of the total student population, but note that this total includes international students and/or students whose degree status makes them ineligible for Pell support irrespective of their economic status.

⧫ Unreported due to small sample size. In compliance with the UW Privacy Office policy on academic data analytics, we only report aggregated student data where the sample size is greater than 5 to preserve confidentiality.
