Part A.1 - Exercises

Due: Friday October 20 at the start of class
Answer this three part question, which relies on material in the text up through Section 3.1.2, as well as on lectures.
The virtual circuits described in the book have local identifiers: an identifier has meaning on a particular link. An alternative is to assign a global identifier to each VC, that is, a single number that represents only that VC in every switch the VC passes through, and is unused elsewhere.
  1. What primary advantage might global identifiers have over local identifiers?
  2. What advantage do local identifiers have over global?
  3. Describe a technique that would allow you to implement global identifiers in switches.


Part A.2 - Reading

Due: Thursday October 19 at the start of sections
Have looked (at least) these sections of the EPC Class-1 Generation-2 UHF RFID Protocol specification:
Introduction, 6.3.2.1.5-6.3.2.3, 6.3.2.4-6.3.2.4.4, 6.3.2.6-6.3.2.8, 6.3.2.10-6.3.2.10.2.4, Appendix D, Appendix E
Look at just enough to see what it is:
Appendix B, Appendix C
They might be useful as references, if you know they're there.)

Note that the tags in the simulator support only a single session, do not implement any of the access functions and so do not implemente the frame types or states related to access, and do not implement any memory except to hold the EPC. Frame formats in the simulator are therefore simplified relative to the spec.
