CSE477 Laboratory Information

Hardware Lab

The hardware laboratory is located in Sieg 327 and is managed by Christopher Morgan. There are fifteen workbenches in the lab. Twelve have Pentium PCs running Windows2000. One is a hardware prototyping and soldering station. The remaining two hold miscellaneous servers and PLD programming stations. There are Tektronix TLA 704 logic analyzers at most stations, as well as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and miscellaneous tools and equipment.

Although there are scheduled lab hours, you are free to do the lab assignments and work on your projects at your convenience. The TAs will be in the lab during lab hours, so if you want their help please attend the scheduled sessions. You will have card-key access to the lab, and can use the lab any time day or night. The lock keeps track of when you enter the lab. Do not remove any equipment, documentation, or tools from the lab. Only students who are registered for CSE477 or CSE467 are permitted to use the lab, so please do not admit anyone anyone else. Please keep the doors locked at all times, to prevent theft. If you see someone in the lab that you think does not belong there, inform Chris, a TA, or the instructor. If we are not available, call the University Police at 9-911.

Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the lab. Do not disrupt your fellow students.

Please help keep the lab clean and neat. If you are leaving the lab for any length of time, please clear your bench so someone else can use it. Do not assume that you can use a workbench indefinitely. If for some reason you need to monopolize a bench or piece of quipment, leave a note explaining the situation, and include your name and a phone number where you can be reached. We will provide each team with drawer space in the lab in which to store your project materials.

Lab Manager

Christopher Morgan (morgan@cs) is the lab manager. He will hold your deposit checks, provide project equipment, grant card-key access, and help you in inumerable ways during the quarter. Report any problems with the laboratory equipment and/or software to him. Please see Chris if you need to check out a manual (or anything else) overnight.

Deposits, Parts, and Money

You must provide a deposit of $200 per person to use the lab. Make your check payable to the University of Washington. Chris will return your check at the end of the quarter when you return your project materials. If you do not return the materials, you will not receive a grade for the course and we will cash your check. Note that we need a check from each of you individually.

Christopher Morgan will provide and/or purchase the parts you need for your projects. See the resources page for more information on ordering parts. Warning: Parts can take several weeks for delivery, so you should determine as soon as possible what parts you need to order. We will purchase all parts for you, and expect you to return these parts at the end of the quarter. If you wish to keep your project after the end of the course, you need to work out an arragement with Chris to reimburse the parts cost.

You are responsible for the cost of replacing any and all parts that you damage or lose through negligence.
