The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science and in Computer Engineering, full-time Masters and Doctoral programs, and a part-time Professional Masters program.

Undergraduate Programs

Why choose Computer Science & Engineering as a field? See two exciting videos here!

UW CSE has two undergraduate programs with approximately 450 majors divided equally between them:

  • a Computer Science degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences graduating approximately 80 students per year, and
  • an ABET-accredited Computer Engineering degree program in the College of Engineering graduating approximately 80 students per year.

Students are admitted to our majors on a competitive basis upon completion of prerequisite courses. Our undergraduates are among the best at the University of Washington -- indeed, in the nation. They enjoy small classes, and interact intensively with the faculty as teaching assistants and via participation in research projects. Intensive "capstone design courses" are a hallmark of our undergraduate major programs; several recent offerings are highlighted in these brief videos

Graduate Programs

The department has two graduate programs:

  • a full-time Graduate Program oriented to research that typically awards 15 PhDs and 25 Masters degrees each year (approximately 150 students are enrolled), and
  • a part-time Professional Masters Program that targets fully-employed professionals in the region's burgeoning information technology industry (with a mix of distance learning and evening courses) and typically awards 30 Masters degrees each year (approximately 125 students are enrolled).

We offer admission to between 10% and 15% of those who apply to our full-time graduate program. Our recent Ph.D. graduates have received offers from essentially every top academic department and industrial research laboratory, and dozens of our recent graduates populate these strong programs. Our Professional Masters Program draws students from more than two dozen of the leading firms in our expanding regional computing and information technology industry.

We participate in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Computational Molecular Biology with several departments in the biological and mathematical sciences.
