Program Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Modern AI Methods at the Allen School is a part-time, evening graduate certificate that is designed with the interests of working professionals and recent graduates in mind.
Program Audience
The Modern AI Methods certificate is designed for a broad audience. Professionals and recent graduates who have proficiency in key math, statistics, and programming topics, such as those with STEM degrees, mathematically-focused business degrees, or similar fields, are likely to find their academic training a good match with the certificate’s scope. Current or prior professional experience is not required for the Modern AI Methods certificate and the program is open to both industry professionals and recent graduates intending to join the workforce.
Professionals with degrees in computer science or extensive software development experience are encouraged to consider the Allen School’s Professional Master’s Program (PMP), as it which is intended for those with significant computer science depth.

Courses
The Modern AI Methods certificate is designed for professionals and recent graduates interested in advancing their knowledge in core and emerging areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The program consists of four courses and can be earned in as little as one year. Courses are taught on the UW Seattle campus and meet one weekday evening per week to accommodate students’ work schedules.
Certificate course topics cover core and emerging areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning such as computer vision, deep learning, and more. Beyond algorithms and applications, each course will also cover topics on ethics in AI, identifying the potential for misuse and bias in AI applications and how to avoid potential negative impacts. Stacked Master’s Degrees
The Modern AI Methods certificate can be completed as a standalone credential or used as a building block toward a UW master’s degree.
When ‘stacked’ with another graduate certificate and a capstone experience, Modern AI Methods students can earn an MS in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Engineering or an ME in Multidisciplinary Engineering. Like the Modern AI Methods certificate, these stacked master’s degrees are designed for working engineers and with industry applications in mind.
