Program Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Modern AI Methods is designed to support both recent graduates and working professionals in advancing their knowledge in core and emerging areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Learning Outcomes and Audience

Modern AI Methods courses cover critical areas of AI and machine learning such as computer vision, deep learning, and more. Beyond algorithms and applications, each course also considers ethics in AI, identifying the potential for mususe and bias in AI applications, and mitigating potential negative impacts. The certificate is designed for recent graduates and professionals proficient in calculus, statistics, and programming, such as those with STEM degrees, mathematically-focused business degrees, or similar fields. Learn more about the key skills necessary for the program and how to demonstrate your proficiency.

Professionals with computer science/engineering degrees or extensive software development experience are encouraged to consider the Computer Science Professional Master’s Program (PMP) alongside Modern AI Methods and the stacked master’s degrees. The PMP is work-compatible and designed to support professionals in advancing in their careers in the software industry.

Program Duration and Format

Modern AI Methods is a part-time program that students complete in one year, with in-person courses meeting one weekday evening per week from 6:30-9:20pm on the UW Seattle campus. The program does not offer hybrid or online options.

Everyone considering Modern AI Methods is invited to attend an online information session! These are low-barrier opportunities for prospective students to meet the program managers, learn more about Modern AI Methods courses and learning outcomes, and ask questions.

Costs & Fees

Modern AI Methods is a self-sustaining, fee-based graduate certificate offered by the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. Fees are charged per-credit and all students pay the same rate, regardless of their citizenship status or Washington state residency.

All rates are subject to modest annual evaluation/changes and these estimates are provided solely for planning purposes.

2026-2027 academic year

The per-credit rate for Modern AI Methods courses is $1170. Students take one 4-credit certificate course per quarter and can project their expenses and total costs for the program:

Modern AI Methods students can also expect to pay about $295 per quarter in additional fees charged to all enrolled students such as the universal student U-PASS, fees for technology and campus infrastructure, and the Services & Activities Fee (includes membership at the IMA gym and campus recreation facilities).

Financial assistance

Students in fee-based programs like Modern AI Methods are encouraged to investigate options for various forms of financial assistance to help cover their program costs such as federal financial aid, veterans education benefits, and employer tuition support. Unfortunately, tuition exemption is not available to Washington State employees enrolled in fee-based programs.
